Google USED to tell us that it was important for search engine rankings to “increase the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.” This was on an older version of their Rankings Article. You’ll notice that that line is not there now. That’s because it was changed to what you see now in the above link. The message is different. Now what Google says makes a site rank better is good quality content. That’s it.

This change was apparently discovered just a few days ago. There was no announcement by Google. Just something noticed by an internet marketer who tweeted it on the 18th. Here’s the original tweet if you’d like to see it.

So there you go. Focus on CONTENT, not LINKS.
